Our Park-Parkour
Submitted by Beth on Thu, 2007-02-08 13:54.
Is it a sport? Is it dangerous? Do you need a special place to do it? Parkour is a new underground 'phenomenon' sweeping cities around the UK and is an activity where you don’t need specialist equipment, just a good pair of trainers, comfortable clothing and a lot of nerve! Coming under the more familiar name of Free Running, Parkour is a physical discipline inspired by human movement. It focuses on uninterrupted, efficient forward motion over, under, around and through obstacles (both human-made and natural) in one's environment. Such movement may involve running, jumping, climbing and more complex techniques. Developed on city streets in France, can Durham's Necklace Park be a perfect place to Parkour? Well thanks to You Tube and some fearless Durhamites, you might recognise some of the locations!! »

parkour
hi beth,
was just going to respond to our little debate we had started about 'parkour in the park'.
the blogs seem to have disappeared ....? - or maybe i've just failed to find them -?
i had replied to a suggestion about 'parkour in nature' that its natural habitat is the 'built environment', and you replied to this saying (in a nutshell) its a physical discipline with its focus on ...fluidity of movement etc.
that's right, - in the same way you could describe hip hop as a style of music and graffiti as a style of painting, -
but it's also a lot more than styles in various diciplines, - i.e parkour like skateboarding, and hip hop etc. are part of an urban culture.
i agree it really doesn't matter whether it's done in a park or the city, but as a phenonema of urban culture not as physical discipline.
talk soon

parkour
It's so much fun once you get the hang of it. I think that the idea of the 'park' is great, and doing parkour in open areas as well as populated cities is great fun. The necklace park will be a great place to practice parkour as well as having fun showing up mates by how much better you are at it than them. I have said too much

Also seen (rather spectacularly) in the latest Bond movie!
